A Tribute Summon Is A Normal Summon

A Tribute Summon Is a Normal Summon

A Tribute Summon is a form of Normal Summon — it is simply a Normal Summon that requires

Tribute(s) for a higher-Level monster. It is not a separate summon type. Consequences:

  • "When/if a monster is Normal Summoned" triggers DO fire off a Tribute Summon. A hand-trap or

trigger keyed to "Normal Summoned" sees a Tribute Summon as a Normal Summon.

  • An extra Normal Summon permission can be spent on a Tribute Summon (you may Tribute for

the additional Normal Summon). See Extra Normal Summons for counting.

"Normal Summon" vs. "Normal Summon/Set" wording

Read the exact wording of an extra-summon permission:

  • "Normal Summon 1 monster (in addition …)" — permits a face-up Normal Summon only

(including a Tribute Summon); it does not let you Set.

  • "Normal Summon/Set 1 monster (in addition …)" — permits a face-up Normal Summon or a Set.
Worked examples.
- A "you can Normal Summon 1 [Type] monster this turn" permission (no "/Set") lets you **Tribute
Summon a higher-Level monster of that type, but not Set** it face-down. (qa/21130)
- A "when a [Type] monster is Normal Summoned, you can Special Summon this card from the hand"
trigger does activate when that monster was Tribute Summoned — a Tribute Summon is a
Normal Summon. (qa/21127)

Distinguish from Special Summons

A monster placed by a Special Summon (including effects that "Special Summon … (treated as a

[X] Summon)", see file 84) is not Normal Summoned, so

"Normal Summoned" triggers do not fire off it. Flip Summon is also not a Normal Summon.

A Normal Set (placing a monster face-down) is also not a Normal Summon: a "when a monster

is Normal Summoned" trigger does not fire off a Normal Set. (db.ygoresources.com qa/21128:

a "Special Summon this card from the hand when a [Type] monster is Normal Summoned" effect does not

trigger when that monster is Set face-down.) The later Flip Summon of that Set monster is

likewise not a Normal Summon.

Tributing by an effect is not paying for a later Tribute Summon

Do not treat any Tribute as if it can be "banked" for a later Summon. A Tribute Summon is a single

summoning procedure: the player declares the Normal/Tribute Summon and Tributes the required

monster(s) as part of that procedure. If a separate card effect makes a player Tribute a monster

during that effect's resolution, that Tribute is only resolving that effect. It does not satisfy

the Tribute requirement for a Level 5 or higher monster the player wants to Normal Summon afterward.

"My opponent resolves an effect that makes me Tribute 1 monster I control. Can I use that Tribute
as the Tribute for a Level 5 or 6 monster from my hand?"
No. You did Tribute a monster, but you did not perform a Tribute Summon. To Tribute Summon a
Level 5 or 6 monster later, you must still use your Normal Summon and Tribute a monster during that
Summon procedure.

Judge calls to watch for

  • "Does my 'when Normal Summoned' effect trigger off a Tribute Summon?" → Yes — Tribute Summon

is a Normal Summon.

  • "I already Tributed a monster because an effect told me to; does that pay for my next Level 5/6

Tribute Summon?" → No. A Tribute caused by an effect is not part of a later Tribute Summon

procedure.

  • An extra "Normal Summon" (no "/Set") permission allows a Tribute Summon but not a Set;

a "Normal Summon/Set" permission allows either. Read the exact words.

  • Special Summons and Flip Summons are not Normal Summons — don't fire "Normal Summoned"

triggers off them.
