Extra Deck Monsters Summoned From Somewhere Other Than the Extra Deck

The placement restriction that an Extra Deck monster "must be Special Summoned to the Extra Monster

Zone, or a Main Monster Zone a Link Monster points to" is tied to the **origin of the Summon (the

Extra Deck), not** to the monster's card type. This file extends

Extra Deck Summon Zones to Link Monsters and to returns

from off the field, and corrects a common Link-zone misconception.

The rule

  • A Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Monster Special Summoned from the Extra Deck must go to

the Extra Monster Zone or a Main Monster Zone a Link Monster points to (see

Link Summoning and file 60).

  • The same monster Special Summoned from anywhere else — the GY (revival), banishment (return),

or the hand — is placed in any open Main Monster Zone, with **no Extra-Monster-Zone and no

linked-zone requirement**.

In other words: the linked-zone / Extra-Monster-Zone requirement applies **only to Summons

performed from the Extra Deck**. A non-Extra-Deck Special Summon ignores it entirely.

Link Monsters specifically

A returning or revived **Link Monster does NOT have to be placed in a Main Monster Zone that

another Link Monster points to. That requirement exists for the Link Summon from the Extra

Deck**, not for placing a Link Monster that re-enters the field from the GY or from banishment.

Worked example — S:P Little Knight self-banish return.
S:P Little Knight's effect banishes itself (and another card) until the End Phase, then it
returns during the End Phase. Where does it go, and must it land in a zone a Link points to?
— It returns to a Main Monster Zone under its original controller, with **no linked-zone
requirement, because the return is not a Summon from the Extra Deck**. (Konami's official
ruling further notes this return "does not start a Chain" and is not even a Special Summon
which makes the linked-zone question doubly moot.)

(Eligibility caveat, separate from the zone rule: a Link Monster can only be Special Summoned from

the GY/banishment if it was first properly Link Summoned before it went there. That is a

who-can-be-summoned prerequisite — see

Properly Summoned — not a which-zone rule.)

Judge calls to watch for

  • Don't apply the "zone a Link points to" requirement to a Link Monster coming back from

banishment or the GY — that requirement is for Extra-Deck Link Summons only.

  • File 60 listed Fusion/Synchro/Xyz for the "from elsewhere → Main Monster Zone" rule; the same

rule covers Link Monsters too.

  • Distinguish the zone rule (this file) from the eligibility rule (a Link must have been

properly Link Summoned to be revivable at all).
