Spell Speed Is a Property of the Effect, Not the Card or Its Zone
Spell Speed describes a specific effect, not the physical card and not the zone the card sits
in. One card can print multiple effects with different Spell Speeds. Always read the individual
effect's timing/conditions to find its Spell Speed — don't assign a Spell Speed to "the card."
The defaults, by effect class
- Spell Speed 1 — Normal Spells, Ignition Effects, Ignition-like Effects, and Trigger Effects.
Activated only in an open game state on your own turn unless the effect's own text grants other
timing (see Turn Structure and Phases).
- Spell Speed 2 — Quick-Play Spells, Quick Effects of monsters, and most Trap Cards. Can chain.
- Spell Speed 3 — a Counter Trap's main on-field negation effect. Only another Counter Trap can
chain to it.
A card's "headline" effect does not fix the Spell Speed of its other effects. Evaluate each
printed effect independently by its own activation conditions and any `(Quick Effect)` tag.
A Counter Trap can carry a lower-Spell-Speed second effect
A Counter Trap is Spell Speed 3 for its negation activation on the field — but a different
effect printed on the same Counter Trap can be a lower Spell Speed.
Official ruling — Super Soldier Shield (Counter Trap). Its Graveyard-activated effect
(remove a Spell Counter to Set this card) is Spell Speed 2, distinct from the card's
Spell Speed 3 field negation. Because that GY effect is Spell Speed 2, it can be chained to other
Spell Speed 2 effects.
— Konami Q&A (db.ygoresources.com qa/16657; JP 2015-09-24, EN 2017-03-24).
So "it's a Counter Trap, therefore Spell Speed 3" is wrong for its non-negation effects. The
Spell Speed 3 label belongs to the negation effect, not the whole card.
There is no rule barring Spell Cards from fast/GY effects
There is no blanket rule that prevents a Spell Card from having a Quick-Effect-like or
Graveyard effect. A Spell card's effect defaults to Spell Speed 1 unless:
- the card is a Quick-Play Spell (Spell Speed 2), or
- that specific effect's printed text grants faster timing (e.g. an explicit
`(Quick Effect)` / "during either player's turn" wording).
So "spells can't have quick GY effects" is false; read the effect's text. (This is the same
principle as a Counter Trap's GY effect above, applied to Spells.)
Spell Speed 1 ignition effects need your Main Phase unless text says otherwise
A Spell Speed 1 Ignition Effect, including an ignition-like effect in the hand or GY, cannot be activated just because its condition is currently true. Unless the effect's own text gives a different timing, it is activated only during your own Main Phase in an open game state.
Albion the Shrouded Dragon's hand/GY effect starts "If this card is in your hand or GY: You can ..." and has no Quick Effect / End Phase timing. If Guiding Quem, the Virtuous sends it to the GY during the End Phase, Albion is in the GY, but its effect is still Spell Speed 1 ignition-like timing. It cannot be activated in the End Phase.
Skilled Dark Magician's effect to Tribute itself and Special Summon Dark Magician is also Spell Speed 1. Even if it has enough Spell Counters, it cannot be activated during the opponent's Battle Phase; it has no "(Quick Effect)" or "during either player's turn" wording.
Do not stop at "the activation condition is met." Ask whether the effect's Spell Speed and timing window permit activation right now.
Judge calls to watch for
- Don't label a whole card with one Spell Speed. A Counter Trap's GY/secondary effect, or a
Continuous Trap's secondary effect, can be Spell Speed 1 or 2.
- Don't claim "Spell Cards can never have quick/GY effects" — no such rule exists; default is
Spell Speed 1 unless the card type or the effect text says otherwise.
- To find an effect's Spell Speed: check its own timing/conditions and any `(Quick Effect)` tag,
then fall back to the card-type default — not the card's most famous effect.
- A Spell Speed 1 ignition or ignition-like hand/GY effect cannot be activated in the End Phase or the opponent's Battle Phase merely because the card is now in the correct zone. Albion the Shrouded Dragon in the GY and Skilled Dark Magician with Spell Counters still need the proper Main Phase / open game-state timing unless their text says otherwise.
