Lp Changes Are Not All "Damage"

LP Changes Are Not All "Damage"

Several different mechanics change Life Points, and only some are "damage." A

damage-prevention effect ("you take no battle damage," "you take no effect damage," "neither

player takes any damage") stops only damage — it does not stop the other LP-change types.

| LP-change wording | Is it "damage"? | Stopped by damage-prevention? |

|---|---|---|

| "inflict X damage" / battle damage | Yes | Yes |

| "pay X LP" (a cost) | No | No (and if you can't afford it, the payment is skipped — see file 59) |

| "lose X LP" (by an effect) | No | No |

| "your/its LP becomes X" (set to a value) | No | No |

| "gain X LP" | No (it's a gain) | No |

The deciding question is the exact wording, not the net LP swing. "Take/inflict damage" is the

only one a damage-prevention effect touches.

Worked example — Earthbound Greater Linewalker vs One Day of Peace.
One Day of Peace makes each player take no damage (until your opponent's next End Phase).
Earthbound Greater Linewalker's effect makes the opponent's LP become 3000. Can it
resolve while One Day of Peace is applying?
Yes. "LP becomes 3000" sets a value; it is not damage, so the damage-prevention
does not stop it. (Konami official Q&A, db.ygoresources.com qa/22686, 2022-12-30.)

Why this matters

  • "Pay LP" is a cost paid on activation; an opponent below the amount simply can't be forced

toward 0 by it (file 59). It is never "damage."

  • "Lose LP" / "LP becomes X" are effects that change LP without being damage — so cards that

trigger "when you take damage," and damage-prevention floodgates, do not interact with them.

  • Conversely, "take no damage" does nothing against a "pay/lose/become" LP effect — don't rule

that One Day of Peace / Des Wombat / battle-fog effects block an LP-set or LP-loss effect.

Judge calls to watch for

  • Read the verb: damage (take/inflict) vs pay vs lose vs becomes X. Only "damage"

is stopped by damage-prevention or counts for "when you take damage" triggers.

  • A "LP becomes X" effect resolves even under One Day of Peace-style damage prevention.
  • Don't treat a forced "pay LP" as lethal chip damage against a low-LP opponent (see file 59).
